The convention seemed to go off really well. It appears that attendance was up, both in terms of bodies on site and total memberships. Despite that, we didn't make our room block - couple of different things contributing to that, but it seems likely that economic conditions saw more people commuting or room sharing. Luckily, we negotiated a good attrition clause with the hotel, so it's not going to cost us that much money.

I can't actually report on much that happened at the con, because I spent nearly all of it in the consuite, leaving only when I had to go to the store to pick up more supplies. I can say that the consuite rocked, and I'm not just tooting my own horn, because lots of other people told me so. The masquerade was great - they had 10 people compete in Junk Pile Wars (1-hour costuming panel) and had to turn away 5 more! And then they also had 15 entrants to the regular masquerade. Lots of great superhero costumes in honor of Bubbleman. Around midnight Saturday night I get someone coming up to me in the hallway asking if I know how to get in touch with [livejournal.com profile] talyen, because someone from the hotel was trying to shut down the dance. Krysta wasn't answering her phone, so I went down to see if I could help, only to find [livejournal.com profile] netmouse and [livejournal.com profile] elizilla already there. Three (former) conchairs versus one hotel night manager - poor guy didn't stand a chance. (Turned out there was some miscommunication to the banquet staff, and they thought they were supposed to reset the rooms at midnight in preparation for the next day.)

But that was about the sum total of my non-consuite-related convention activity. I'll post my consuite related thoughts separately, since it's going to take me more time than I have to write up.

The consuite rocked.

So there, those who may doubt!

I heard from Chad that there were 200 people in the consuite for the "Raise one for Howard DeVore". I called him but he was doing his toast and didn't return my call; I'd told him and others that I'd call. If it wasn't for the project I am on, I'd have been there. I've told my boss that no matter what I am going to France in August (not sure of the dates yet) and turned in my vacation request for World Fantasy in November since I am doing committee/volunteer work.

That room can't hold 200 people, but I think 60 or 75 squeezed themselves in.

60 or 75 sounds more realistic to me.

Congrats on a great con. I'm sorry I missed it.

Thanks for taking care of my registration. I really appreciate it.

The consuite admirably performed the dominant form of popular music of late 20th century Amercain youth.

They tried to shut down the Mediterranean Room, too. But you said to just take down any further signs of that nature, so I did.

Hi Matt any details on this?

Sure. At 1:40 a.m. Sunday morning, I went to the Mediterranean Room and saw an 8.5" x 11" peice of white paper taped to the glass of the left-hand door. On it was written something to the effect of "Mediterranean Room will close at midnight to set up for tomorrow's functions." The gamers were gaming and cheerfully ignoring this sign. I tore it down and went looking for you or Tammy or someone to show it to. Eventually I threw it into the trash can in Ops.

Kind of weird since the room did not need a new setup on Sunday.

Sorry I couldn't make it to 'Fusion. (It was the right choice not to go, though-- it would've been the fifth weekend in a row without seeing my home, and I was getting whatever the opposite of "cabin fever" is. I *badly* needed some alone time at home.)

*Sigh*-- not sure when I'll make it back to 'Fusion again. I likely won't have as flexible an employer in the future as I do now (there's not much good to say about my job otherwise, but it *is* flexible!) and most years I'll be going to GaFilk (my new favorite relaxacon!) and Arisia (oh-so-convenient and inexpensive, and I see a lot of people there, so I can't resist) in January, which leaves little energy/time/money left to fly out of town for 'Fusion, my favoritest con ever. *Snif*. But maybe I'll manage it somehow regardless.

I'm always glad to help and look forward to being staff for it next year, maybe? ;)

I've not yet committed myself to doing it next year (although I'm leaning that direction), but if I do, I'd be overjoyed to have both you and M'jit on my staff!

Thanks again for all your hard work.

It was a very good con suite, and I wouldn't say that if I didn't think it was true. Even compared to some of the Chicago cons, which certainly spends more per member, the Confusion con suite had a much more social vibe.

I almost think it was too good. I don't think a con suite should be competing with parties on Saturday night. But I doubt you'll find that a persuasive argument, :) and different conventions should have different emphases.

I didn't see the masquerade, but I saw most of the costumes in the lobby. I had dinner with my brother and his partner, and they visited in the lobby for a little while. My brother-in-law is a photographer and he was very amused by what he saw. I might talk him into a Saturday membership next year.

I'm fine with the competition. ConFusion's room party scene is a lot weaker than it used to be, and anything that raises the standards is great with me. (I'm not criticizing specific parties here, just pointing out that there were more parties at the Van Dyke, which was probably a function of layout.)

We started the Pirate Party to help liven things up. Tammy's doing the same thing. I support that.

I'm not sure that there were more parties at the VDP. I was quite impressed by the number of parties this weekend.

Huh. So I wonder if the miscommunication about the dance explains the hand written sign on the door to the dance that read something like, "This room closes at 11:59pm." That really really baffled me as I couldn't figure out any sane reason why the con would suddenly decide that the dance has to end at midnight.

Yep, the hotel made that sign, not us.
